Madaster Connect 2024: Transforming Together for a Circular Built Environment

Blogs 13 nov 2024
On November 6th in London, we hosted the Madaster Connect 2024 Summit, our inaugural gathering focused on driving the circular economy in the built environment. Bringing together the Madaster Network, industry leaders, and innovators, this event provided a unique opportunity for collaboration, idea exchange, and actionable steps toward creating a more sustainable and circular built environment.

Transforming Together

We believe that a circular economy cannot be achieved in isolation. That is why alongside the Madaster platform we facilitate a range of activities to support knowledge sharing and network building through the Madaster Network and selected the theme of ‘Transforming Together’ for our inaugural Summit. It is our hope that by facilitating dynamic conversations, knowledge-sharing sessions, and hands-on workshops, we can collectively drive change in the built environment.

Highlights

Here’s what we discussed:

  • A call for Transparency, Clarity, and Education
Our Pioneer Partners, Drees & Sommer, Morgan Sindall Group, and Greencore Homes, shared why transparency and education are critical in advancing material passports.
  • Inspiring Circular Projects
We heard from British Land, EPEA, GPE, and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios about circularity in action, with practical examples from UK and international projects showcasing the potential for scalable, circular construction practices.
  • Updates on Circularity Initiatives
Experts from academia and industry bodied shared progress on initiatives involving circularity and material passports.
  • Keynote: Unlocking the power of the circular economy
Dr. David Greenfield delivered a compelling keynote, encouraging all participants to take concrete steps in accelerating the industry’s transformation toward circularity.

In addition, networking opportunities allowed participants to explore these topics further, fostering connections and potential collaborations that could amplify the impact of circular practices.

Next Steps and Continuing the Journey

During our breakout session, attendees crafted short- and long-term actions to drive the industry forward. Participants left with commitments on what they can accomplish within the next two months to contribute to a circular built environment

As Madaster, our key takeaway is a commitment to making material passports more accessible and understandable for all stakeholders. We will aim to support the standardization of material passport approaches and continue sharing success stories that build a strong business case for circularity.
