A vision for circularity
The project aims to introduce, for the first time in Ireland, a scalable material passport solution applicable to both new and existing buildings. By providing detailed insights into material composition and lifecycle data, stakeholders will be empowered to make informed design and strategic decisions. This initiative will drive greater circularity, reduce whole-life carbon emissions, and contribute to a more sustainable and resource-efficient built environment.
This project aligns with Ireland’s commitment to reducing climate impacts within construction, promoting innovation, and enhancing the sector’s competitiveness and productivity.
The IGBC is collaborating with industry stakeholders BAM UK & Ireland, IPUT Real Estate Dublin, Kingspan Insulated Panels UK & Ireland, Limerick Twenty Thirty DAC, Savills Ireland and Walls Construction Limited.
The project will explore the potential of material passports to unlock key benefits for Irish construction. The initiative, which is due to run until October 2025, will achieve the following outcomes:
- Quantification of Circular Economy Benefits: Analysis of how material passports can improve resource efficiency and sustainability in the sector.
- Policy and Regulation Recommendations: Development of actionable recommendations to integrate material passports into Irish construction practices.
This one-year initiative will follow a structured work plan, including:
- Market Research: Establishing a demonstration project showcasing Madaster’s functionalities using a generic building model.
- Hands-On Trial Projects: Stakeholder-specific trials with developers, manufacturers, contractors, and designers to explore real-world applications of material passports.
- Best Practice Guidelines: Providing guidance on data collection, addressing gaps, and quantifying circularity benefits.
Why this matters
By enabling the reuse and recycling of materials, material passports pave the way for a resource-efficient, low-carbon future in construction. This collaboration underscores our shared vision with IGBC to create a more sustainable built environment, contributing directly to Ireland’s green goals and strengthening its global leadership in construction innovation.
