KWS COMPLETES SCHIPHOL TRADE PARK AS THE FIRST BUSINESS PARK IN THE WORLD WITH A MADASTER MATERIAL PASSPORT

Amsterdam, 31 August 2020. Schiphol Trade Park in Hoofddorp, an SADC development project, is the first business park in the world to have been completed with a Madaster material passport. Contractor KWS was in charge of the complete construction of the infrastructure in the business park and, thus, also of the Madaster registration. Today, Madaster director Martijn Oostenrijk and Frank Groot, director KWS Infra Amsterdam-Utrecht, symbolically handed over the passport to Rob de Wit of SADC.

By providing Schiphol Trade Park with a Madaster material passport, KWS facilitates maintaining the value of the business park by transferring information onto the future. The Madaster material passport is a database that stores information about the identity of a building, object or work of art and their underlying materials, with the aim of encouraging the careful use of resources, thus, reducing waste and wastage.

CIRCULAR EXAMPLES

Examples of the types of circular products recorded in the material passport include biobased paving materials that contain miscanthus (elephant grass) and the 100% recycled asphalt that is produced by KWS’ HERA System. In this way, KWS ensures that the business park is and will remain circular — not only today but also in the future. They form an excellent contribution to the sustainable ambitions of both KWS and SADC, aimed to making Schiphol Trade Park the most sustainable and innovative business park in Europe.

‘Together with KWS and SADC, Madaster is showing that it is possible to create a material passport for an entire business park. A great result in which client SADC and sustainable builder KWS are securing the materials used in Schiphol Trade Park for future use. In addition to providing passports for buildings, this is a first step for Madaster to also do so for infrastructural works. This beautiful project deserves a sequel, in a subsequent broader application,’says Madaster’s director Martijn Oostenrijk.

MADASTER MATERIAL PASSPORT

In addition to stimulating the reuse of resources and reducing waste and wastage, the Madaster material passport also provides insight into the way in which materials have been processed, can be disassembled, their market value and future salvage value, and the degree of circularity. This information facilitates easier high-quality reuse of materials at the end of the lifespan of a building, object or work of art and the products included in them.

Madaster, including the material passport, is a public platform for the entire real estate world. This gives everyone the opportunity to utilise the platform, so that materials can be reused in a high-quality manner and are easy to maintain. KWS and SADC see Madaster as a valuable link in working towards a future-proof and circular society. KWS meanwhile is working with the Madaster material passport in many of its projects.
