ENGIE AND MADASTER JOIN FORCES TO COMBAT WASTE

Bunnik – 14 february 2019 – ENGIE and Madaster are joining forces to eliminate waste within the built environment. Madaster functions as an online library that documents materials and buildings. The users of Madaster may use the platform to generate material passports for their buildings. Such documentation, registration and archiving of materials ensures that these materials keep their identity and will not end up in the growing mountain of landfill. ENGIE will be using Madaster’s material passport in the circular maintenance and management of technical installations. This will enable ENGIE to provide its customers with insight into, and improvement of, their circularity index, and will also encourage the sustainable use and reuse of materials.

MATERIAL PASSPORT

Via this online library, users of Madaster may generate a secure, web-based material passport for their buildings. A material passport contains information about the quality and origins of materials, the disassembling options of the various products and their current location. This makes them easier to recover and reuse, in cases of renovation and restoration. Buildings, thus, become documented ‘storage units’ of materials. In addition, circular and financial information flows are linked, thus revealing the historical, current and future value of materials, products, elements, the building itself and all of these combined.

‘We are very pleased to add ENGIE to our network of partners. ENGIE manages large amounts of building information and possess knowledge and experience about material use. Using material passports in their customers’ maintenance and management phases will increase acceptation of the concept of material passports and will stimulate the sustainable use of materials. Together, we can expedite the transformation to a circular economy.’
Jeroen Broersma, Business Developer Madaster

‘ENGIE strives to be a front runner in the energy transition, and we are a proponent of the circular economy. Because of our experience in managing both buildings and other assets, we are able to help our customers in making smarter use of materials. The material passport is very useful in this respect, as Madaster is an independent platform that can be used not only to generate material passports, but also for the financial valuation of materials and to provide a Circularity Indicator for each building. Our customers have recently indicated that they are interested in the possibilities of circularity and the use of material passports. Collaboration with Madaster, therefore, was a logical step.’
Michiel Burggraaff, Manager Commercial Real Estate, at ENGIE
