BNA TRADE ORGANISATION FOR DUTCH ARCHITECTURAL FIRMS IS STIMULATING CIRCULAR DESIGN WITH MATERIAL PASSPORTS

BNA is entering into a partnership with Madaster, the online registry for construction materials and buildings. This partnership provides easy access to the Madaster platform for affiliated architects and enables them to become acquainted with the Madaster material passport. More insight into the materials and products that are used in buildings will facilitate their reuse and offers more scope for circular design.

CIRCULAR DESIGN

Architects increasingly focus not only on the architecture and quality of a building, but also on the impact that buildings have on their surroundings and the world of today. Circular construction and design is a hot topic; especially considering the major challenges that lie ahead in terms of climate, energy and natural resources. As a trade organisation for architectural firms, BNA is aiming to take circular design and construction one step further; for example, through the BNA Network Circular Architecture and a white paper that currently contains dozens of exemplary projects: https://www.bna.nl/circulaire-voorbeeldprojecten.

MATERIAL PASSPORT

Registration and documentation of the materials and products used in a building are essential to circular design. It prevents materials from being anonymously discarded as waste. The registered data are securely stored, cleverly enriched, easily shared and managed on the online Madaster platform. On this platform, material passports can be generated for buildings or entire portfolios of buildings. The comprehensive information in a material passport enables the high-quality reuse of existing building elements and how these could be disassembled — enabling a long lifespan.

Michael Bol, Architect – Stadmaker Buro Kade
‘Something that is not well-designed can never be sustainable! In order to achieve a good and stable design, digital registration of constructions and materials is a prerequisite for our firm.’

PARTNERSHIP

The BNA–Madaster partnership lowers the threshold for members to become acquainted with Madaster through an Enterprise Licence. In this way, architects can immediately use material passports and information from the Madaster platform to create circular designs.
